Aggies Top Blinn, 5-1
COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Junior Mel Dumezich plated three runs on an early home run as the Texas
A&M softball team defeated Blinn College, 5-1, Tuesday at the Aggie
Softball Complex in the Aggies’ first fall game of the season. Dumezich’s
bomb came in the first inning, scoring juniors Brittany Walker and
Meagan May in the process. Walker reached on four balls and May singled
before both runners advanced on an illegal pitch and a wild pitch.
The
Aggies kept the 3-0 lead through the fifth inning and saw pitching
debuts by an all-freshman staff. Lauren Ainsley started the game in the
circle and pitched three complete innings, fanning four batters along
the way. The right hander earned the win, allowing two hits and walking
two batters.
Right-handed freshman Kayla Klein threw a full two
innings, walking two batters and giving up one unearned run on an RBI
single in the top of the fifth. Leftie Sara Mireles closed the game
with a two-inning outing. The freshman allowed only one runner on base,
on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh.
Leading 3-1 in the
bottom of the fifth, the Aggies scored again. Pinch runner Kaydee
Rayburn had the unearned run on a sacrifice fly to right field by
sophomore Taran Tyler. Rayburn took the place of May, who had reached
on an error by the Buccaneers’ first baseman. A single to right field
by sophomore Nicole Morgan sent the sophomore to third before she
pushed the Aggies out to a 4-1 lead.
Quick-footed freshman
Brittany Clopton sealed the deal in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a
run on a throw-out at first. The center fielder led the inning off with
a single to the shortstop, beating the throw to first with lightning
speed. A single up the middle by Walker with one out on the board gave
Clopton room to reach third, and on the next at-bat the freshman flew
home for a 5-1 A&M advantage.
Blinn was unable to retaliate
in the seventh as Mireles shut down three-of-four batters and threw two
strikeouts, and the Aggies ended their fall opener with a 5-1 victory.
The home team controlled the game, outhitting Blinn 10-to-3. Walker was
2-for-3 with two singles, while Rayburn, sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk and
junior Sydney Shannon each had base hits. Every able member of the
20-person squad saw action during the game.
The A&M softball
team will continue fall ball with a doubleheader Saturday at the SKGSL
Classic in Spring, Texas. The day will consist of a 12:30 p.m. game
against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a 3 p.m. matchup with Stephen
F. Austin.
