Soccer Kicks Off Spring With Match vs. Rice
COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
The reigning Big 12 Champion Texas A&M soccer team kicks off the
spring season at home with a 4 p.m. Sunday match vs. Rice at Ellis
Field. The game against the Owls is the first of five
exhibition matches for the Aggies, who ended the 2011 season with a
17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, a 12th-and-final Big 12
Championship, a No. 21 national ranking and a 16-6-2 record. The
Owls were 10-7-4 in 2011, advancing to the Conference USA Tournament
semifinals for the first time ever and garnering the most wins the team
has seen in a single season in the past three years. Sophomore Jessica
Howard was selected to the C-USA All-Conference first team and the
NSCAA All-Central Region team, while senior Hope Ward was named the
team’s MVP after leading Rice with five assists and ranking second with
48 shots. Nicky Adams (nee Thrasher) was promoted to head coach in
November of 2010 and completed her first full season at the helm of
Rice soccer this year. Adams was a highly-decorated player under
Guerrieri at A&M from 1997-2001. Sunday’s match is FREE to the public and parking will also be FREE in lot 100 at Reed Arena.
