Scarvelis Claims NCAA Bronze in Hammer

Tennessee junior Stamatia Scarvelis earned bronze in the hammer throw to start the women's competition Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Scarvelis broke her own school record twice during the contest, striking a distance of 69.10 meters (226-8) on her fifth attempt to seal her third-place finish.

The bronze finish capped a strong year in the hammer for Scarvelis, a native of Santa Barbara, California. She won the gold medal in the event at SEC meet last month and was second in the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying.

Ole Miss' Janeah Stewart captured the NCAA crown with a mark of 72.92m (239-3).

Scarvelis wasn't the only Lady Vol to record a school record Thursday.

Senior Shania Collins broke her own 100m record en route to qualifying for Saturday's finals in the 100m and 200m.

In the 100m, Colins crossed the line in a record time of 10.98 seconds to win the first heat and advance to the finals as the No. 2 seed. Later in the session, she won the second heat of the 200m in 22.67 to book a spot in the final eight.

Freshman Alexis Duncan earned second-team All-America honors in the 100m hurdles, running in 12.93. Senior Felecia Majors also picked up second-team honors with a 13th-place result in the 400m (52.59).

The Vols' 4x100m relay team of Duncan, Majors, Collins and Maia McCoy placed ninth in 43.48, just one spot out of advancing to the finals.

UP NEXT: On Friday, two Vols will contend for national titles in the men's competition: Mustaqeem Williams in the 200m and Zach Long in the 5,000m. Junior Maya Neal will start the heptathlon for the women.
