Four Vols Earn SEC Swimming, Diving Honors
The Tennessee swimming
and diving team closed out the fall semester by earning four SEC weekly
awards, the conference announced Tuesday.
After their winning
performances at the Tennessee Invitational, junior Erika Brown was
named SEC Swimmer of the Week and senior Rachel Rubadue took home SEC
Diver of the Week honors for the Lady Vols. For the men, seniors Joey
Reilman and Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng respectively earned SEC swimmer and
diver honors.
Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) earned her third SEC honor
of the season after winning eight events at the invitational. She led
the field in the 50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle and
was part of all five winning relays for the Lady Vols. All eight times
were NCAA automatic qualifiers.
Brown broke onto the national
scene as a sophomore last year by finishing NCAA runner up in two
events and has put together a strong followup season. At the midway
point in the season, she is ranked in the top 15 nationally in four
events: second in the 50 free (21.52), third in the 100 fly (50.46),
fifth in the 100 free (47.18) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (51.88).
She will conclude her fall as part of Team USA at the FINA Short Course
World Championships in Hangzhou, China (Dec. 11-16).
Rubadue
(Columbus, Ohio) collected two diving victories to help the Lady Vols
take first in the home invitational. She won the 1-meter springboard
(283.05) and the platform competition (278.15) and also took second on
3-meter (308.55).
Reilman (Medina, Ohio) put together the swim
of his career in the 200 backstroke finals, becoming the second Vol to
ever go below 1:40. He touched the wall in 1:39.36, the second-fastest
time in the NCAA this season and an automatic national qualifier. He
also won the 200 freestyle and was part of three winning relays for the
Vols as the team won the Tennessee Invitational over Duke, Denver,
Penn, Penn State and Carson-Newman.
Zeng (Fujian, China)
collected SEC Diver of the Week honors for the fourth time this season
and the 10th time in his two seasons at Tennessee. He won the 1-meter
springboard (428.50) and nearly broke the 500-point barrier on platform
for the second time in his UT career, winning in 492.40. He also took
second on the 3-meter springboard (393.90).
